Narrative
Sir Richard Acton (7th Baronet, 1801–1837) – Revival of the Estate
Sir Richard Acton, 7th Baronet (born 1801) came of age in 1822 and finally brought active leadership back to Aldenham Park

. Once he attained his majority, he initiated significant improvements to the house and grounds. Between 1825 and 1828, Sir Richard remodeled the old mansion in a refined late-Georgian style, hiring architect Edward Haycock for the design

. As part of this renewal, he also built a private Catholic chapel on the estate, cleverly reusing the façade of a former garden building for the chapel’s front

. These works reflected the Acton family’s Catholic faith (inherited from Sir John’s conversion abroad) and restored Aldenham’s stature as a comfortable gentry seat after years of relative quiet.
In 1832, Sir Richard married Marie-Louise Pelline von Dalberg, the only daughter of the 1st Duke of Dalberg

. This union linked the Actons to European high nobility and brought a considerable inheritance. Sir Richard even adopted the surname “Dalberg-Acton” in 1833 to honor his wife’s illustrious family

. Under their short stewardship, Aldenham Park’s interiors and landscape saw further embellishment. After Sir Richard’s untimely death in 1837 (at only 36), his widow – Marie, Lady Acton – briefly oversaw the estate. Between his death and her remarriage in 1840 to the 2nd Earl Granville, Lady Acton made additional enhancements at Aldenham

. Notably, around 1840 a grand formal parterre garden was laid out by celebrated landscape designer William A. Nesfield, adding Victorian elegance to the grounds

. At this point, Aldenham Park was firmly reestablished as an important country house, blending the Acton family heritage with new continental influences brought by Lady Acton.
