Narrative

ANo. 12 BUS became under the low bridge in Portland-road, South Norwood, when the driver continued straight along the road instead of turning right into Manorroad. Although there were 50 passengers aboard, only one woman was slightly injured.

This was said at Croydon Magistrates Court on Wednesday when the driver, Frederick Joseph Ernest Smith, Worsted-green, Merstham, Surrey, pleaded guilty to driving without care. He was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. WAkNING SIGNS Mr. J. Haines, prosecuting, said Smith was travelling along Portlandroad towards Penge.

The bridge is indicated clearly by a warning sign in the road and also a sign on the low bridge itself. On March 23, Smith stopped his vehicle in Portland-road to pick up 'some passengers. When he started up he drove straight on instead of following the route into Manorroad. The bus became jammed beneath the bridge. Smith told the bench he had been driving on that route for only four and a half weeks.

He knew of the bridge, but had driven straight on without thinki ng His wife had been seriously ill that day and he had been very worried about her. Mr. H. Newman, defending, said Smith had been driving for 30 years and had a clean record.
