Sir John Acton to the Coheiresses (1621 Partition):
Sir John Acton died in 1621 with no male heirs. Under English law, the manor of Elmley Lovett was partitioned equally into four parts among his four daughters: Elizabeth Acton (married the diarist, Henry Townshend) Anne Acton (married Walter Colles) Helen/Eleanor Acton (married Thomas Thornborough) Penelope Acton (married John Lench) Henry Townshend’s Consolidation (1620s onwards):
Through his marriage to Elizabeth, Henry Townshend (the diarist) gained control of her $1/4$ share. He then systematically bought out the $1/4$ shares of his sisters-in-law, Eleanor Thornborough and Anne Colles. This aggressive buyout consolidated $3/4$ of the Elmley Lovett manor back into a single estate, which remained under Townshend family ownership until 1742.
